TOPSOIL CALCULATOR / FIELD GUIDE
A small depth makes a big difference.
Plan the volume of a thin layer without confusing inches and feet.
The topsoil calculator can estimate the volume of a topdressing layer using Known area. Enter the lawn area that will actually receive material and the depth you have chosen. It calculates quantity; selecting an appropriate material, depth and treatment timing is a separate lawn-care decision.
1,000 ft² at a quarter inch
Convert ¼ inch to feet: 0.25 ÷ 12 = 1/48 ft. Multiply by the area: 1,000 ÷ 48 = 20.8333… ft³. Divide by 27 to get 0.771604… yd³ without allowance. In 2 ft³ bags, 10.4166… rounds up to 11 bags. At a supplier increment of 0.25 yd³, the bulk order rounds up to 1 yd³.
This depth is an arithmetic example. It is not a recommendation to topdress every lawn with topsoil.
Measure the part being treated
- Exclude paving, paths, beds and other areas that will not receive the layer.
- Break an irregular lawn into non-overlapping rectangles, or use a measured total area.
- Use separate rows if areas need different depths.
- Enter 0.25 in for a quarter inch in imperial mode. Entering 0.25 ft would make the layer twelve times deeper.
Check material and delivery assumptions
Fine layers make measurement errors noticeable. Recheck the area and units before ordering. Ask the supplier whether its volume is loose or finished, and use an allowance only when it is appropriate for that product and job. The calculator does not predict settlement.
University of Maryland Extension’s lawn maintenance guidance discusses soil testing and treating established lawns. Check advice suitable for your location and turf before choosing a treatment.
Compare quantities with the soil coverage chart and compare the purchase options in bags versus bulk.
