TOPSOIL CALCULATOR / FIELD GUIDE

Measure the space your raised bed still needs.

Use the inside dimensions and the added depth, rather than the size printed on the frame.

A raised bed’s outside dimensions include its frame. Soil fills the interior space. Measure internal length and width, then the vertical distance from the existing surface to the intended fill line. If soil is already present, enter only the depth being added.

Plan view and a separate side view. Measure only the space to be filled; drawings are not to scale.

Example: a 4 × 8 ft interior

At 12 inches of added depth, the interior volume is 4 × 8 × 1 = 32 ft³, or 1.185185… yd³. With no allowance, that equals 16 whole 2 ft³ bags. If your supplier sells in 0.25 yd³ increments, the bulk order rounds to 1.25 yd³.

If the same bed needs only another 3 inches, the added volume is 4 × 8 × 0.25 = 8 ft³, or four 2 ft³ bags before allowance. Using the full frame height in this situation would count existing fill again.

Several beds or unusual shapes

For identical beds, use the quantity field. For different footprints or depths, add separate rows. Choose Circle for a round bed and enter its internal diameter. For an independently measured irregular footprint, choose Known area. Do not add both the full footprint and its component rectangles.

The tool sums measured volume before applying the selected allowance. Whole bags are then rounded for the combined order, rather than rounding each row into bags first. That matters when offcuts in bag quantities can be shared across beds.

Quantity and soil blend are different decisions

The result is the total added material volume. If a growing mix has several ingredients, plan their proportions separately rather than treating the entire result as a topsoil-only prescription. University of Maryland Extension explains soil selection for raised beds. The calculator does not test drainage, fertility or suitability for a particular crop.

For the purchasing decision, use bags versus bulk. The method page documents conversions, circular measurements and input limits.
